Around Stacheville: Notes from two conference wins
Both Govs' basketball teams cruised to victories in their conference openers.
Both Govs’ basketball teams were in action on New Year’s Day to open conference play. The women were down in Jacksonville taking on the Dolphins, while the men welcomed the North Florida Ospreys to town.
The women’s team escaped the Sunshine State with a 71-65 victory, while the men took care of business at home once again with a 102-83 victory.
It’s always good to open with a win in conference play. The women now sport a 9-1, 1-0 record, while the men are at 7-5, 1-0.
Now, let’s go over some notes from both games:
Women’s team wins without Charlote- Veronaye Charlton went down in the Berry game and did not play against JU. Charlton is a big loss, as she’s second on the team with 10.5 points per game. The Govs were able to win without her in Jacksonville, but she is needed as we go deeper into conference play.
Williams, Sheals lead the way- Without Charlton, Mya Williams and Anovia Sheals stepped up on offense. Williams led the way with 21 points while Sheals contributed 19.
Men do something that hasn’t been done since 2007- The Govs scored 100+ in a conference game for the first time since 2007, in a three-overtime loss to SEMO. The Govs did score 100+ in the 2023-24 tournament, but that 2007 matchup is the most recent regular season conference game with 100+ points.
CP back to dominating- Collin Parker didn’t have the greatest month of December, but he bounced back in a huge way on Thursday. The big man contributed a team-high 26 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists.
Ja’Corey Robinson Goes Crazy- If you watched the game, Ja’Corey Robinson undoubtedly stuck out to you. The true freshman played like a star, ending with 18 points, two steals, three blocks, two assists, and six rebounds. His hustle was incredible, and I didn’t realize how deadly he is around the rim.
Rashaud Marshall goes down- Marshall went down with a lower body injury in the first and never returned. The big man had to be helped off the court and spent some time in the locker room before returning to the bench with a wrap on his calf area. After the game, Coach Gipson said he thinks Marshall will be okay going forward, which is a good sign.
